Speed up Adobe Reader
Everyone uses Adobe Reader to open PDF files. You know the type of files - things like user manuals, government forms, brochures etc. But we all know how long it takes for Adobe Reader to get started - you could almost go and make a cup of coffee waiting for it to load....

...well this great utililty changes all that. Adobe Reader now opens in a flash. I tried it on a client's PC tonight - it opened her PDF's really fast and she was a really happy camper. No more waiting around.

Download it here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4139.html

Phishing
One of my clients fell for a scam email and gave out her personal info including her social security number, debit card info etc. It was an email that purported to be from AOL.

In computing  terms, phishing is the act of attempting to fraudulently acquire through deception sensitive personal information such as passwords and credit card details by masquerading in an official-looking email, IM, etc. or as someone trustworthy with a real need for such information. It is a form of social engineering.

If you receive an email from, for example, your bank or credit card company asking for personal information, please be very wary. It is almost certainly not genuine as you would never be asked to disclose this type of information in an email, irrespective if how official looking the email or link to the website may appear.

Free and half-price anti-virus programs & a great spyware removal tool

I came across this useful page on the Microsoft website.

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/downloads/default.mspx

If your anti-virus is coming up for renewal, you may like to try an alternative, especially if you are using McAfee or Norton. I am not a fan of these anti-virus programs. Norton, especially, slows older PC's down considerably and I've noticed that many of my clients with virus infections have Norton on their system.

The link offers you free trials varying between 3 months and 1 year from several anti-virus vendors.

I strongly recommend either Trend Micro PC-Cillin or F-Secure.

When you click through to the Trend Micro site, they offer you the chance to buy their program at half price rather than trial it for 90 days. This is a really good deal. I use Trend Micro on my laptop and I am very happy with it.

I also like F-secure, which is well known in the corporate world and well regarded.

Very Important - Just remember to uninstall your old anti-virus program before you install a new one.

The other anti-virus program I recommend is NOD32 from Eset (another vendor that is not well known but with an excellent record for indentifying viruses). It is very light, so ideal for older PCs

SPYWARE

Almost every PC I work on is infected by spyware. Microsoft has a free program, which comes near the top of the ratings for identifying and removing spyware. I advise you to download and run this program on your system. Just follow the wizard and say yes to everything!! You may be surprised by the results of the initial scan.

You can read information on spyware and download from here:

Keep Identity Thieves at Bay
This article was emailed to me by PC World Magazine. One of the biggest threats to PC users is spyware - it has become an epidemic, and I find spyware on EVERY PC I repair. Whatever you do, don't get fooled into paying for spyware removal apps that pester you with pop-ups. At best, these are not as effective as free applications - at worst, they actually install spyware onto your system. There are one or two genuine vendors who sell spyware removal apps such as Pest Patrol and Spy Sweeper.

Security Tips:  By PC World contributor Bob Tedeschi

Identity theft is one of the fastest-growing crimes in the United
States, with victim complaints quadrupling between 2000 and 2004,
according to the Federal Trade Commission. Most victims are hit merely with credit card account hijackings, but for many others the situation is much worse. In the past five years, the FTC estimates, 10 million people have had criminals open new credit card accounts, secure utility services, or apply for mortgages under their names, spinning a web of deceit that can take years to unravel. Here's how to protect your good name.

Don't click on links or images in unsolicited e-mail. If a company
with which you do business asks you to contact it, open a new browser window, type in the company's Web address, and log in to your account. Otherwise, call the company.

Use a good spam filter. With the right filter, phishing e-mail
messages may never even reach your inbox. Check out our list of top
antispam tools in "Spam-Proof Your Inbox":

Install spyware detection software. Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and Spybot
Search & Destroy have versions that are free for personal and
noncommercial use. These programs ranked at the top of their class in
our June security superguide, "Bigger Threats, Better Defense":

Consider a credit monitoring service. For $44 per year, for instance,
TransUnion's Identity Fraud Watch service sends weekly e-mail notices
reporting changes to your credit profile. Equifax and Experian cost a
bit more--$100 and $120, respectively--but they also give you access
to your credit reports. Consumers in California and Texas can also
request a "credit freeze," whereby potential creditors access your
credit report only with your authorization. (Each time you open your
credit report to a potential creditor, it costs $8 per agency, and
another $10 to freeze the report again.)

Review your credit card charges. Fraudsters will often make small
charges over a period of time to avoid detection.

Keep credit card information off your hard drive. Store such data on
CD-RWs instead--and keep the discs out of your drive when you're not
using them so hackers can't get at the data. If you must keep such
data on your drive, protect it with something like Password Agent,
which has a free limited version and costs only $20 for an unlimited
version. Go to Moon Software's site for info:
http://pcwnl.pcworld.com/t/298331/23075833/807001/0/

Keep your Social Security number private. If companies use it as part
of your account number or ID card, request that the number be changed (but note that the companies are not obligated to make this modification).

Get a credit report twice a year. As of December, federal law entitles
consumers to one free, yearly report.

Calling all iPod lovers
I stumbled upon this great, FREE program. It turns your iPod into a PDA. Among other things, it allows you to transfer mail, appointments, contacts, tasks and notes from Outlook to your iPod.

You can download weather and local movies times from the internet, and even transfer songs from your iPod to your PC-a lifesaver if your PC crashes and you didn't backup all those music downloads you purchased off iTunes....

It's call iPod agent and here's the link: http://www.ipodsoft.com/softwaredetail.aspx?sid=1#download
